Commemoration held for fallen soldiers in Gac Ma battle

A ceremony was held at the Gac Ma Memorial Site in Cam Hai Dong commune, Khanh Hoa province on Monday to commemorate 64 naval soldiers who bravely sacrificed their lives to defend the Gac Ma, Len Dao, and Co Lin Reefs in Vietnam's Truong Sa (Spratly) on March 14, 1988.

Former President Truong Tan Sang, leaders of Khanh Hoa province, localities, military units, and a large number of people released lanterns and offered incense in commemoration of the 64 martyrs.

At the ceremony, the Organizing Board presented gifts to martyrs' relatives, awarded scholarships to students, and presented national flags to fishermen.

Bui Hoai Nam, Chairman of the Labor Confederation of Khanh Hoa province, said the program shows the gratitude of all Vietnamese people for 64 martyrs who heroically sacrificed their lives to protect the sacred waters of the Fatherland.

"Trade Union at all levels have promoted paying gratitude activities and rekindled the tradition of protecting national sovereignty of sea and islands,” said Mr. Nam.
